One of the many ills of society is the total absent of employment opportunities. Nigeria is no exception. I was born and bred in Nigeria. I’ve spent considerable time studying the workings of democracy in my country and others as well. I therefore have first-hand experience and knowledge of how things work and vice-versa. One of the many points government considers a huge achievement is the graduation of students and youths from school or NYSC. Hundreds of thousands of them are graduated. It’s a yearly routine. This in my view is an achievement. Everybody wants to move further in life and get closer to his/her dreams. Sadly however, the achievement isn’t complete especially in the Nigerian context. Where government fails woefully is not making futuristic plans for these graduates in terms of extending job opportunities to them or perhaps empowered economically after graduation. They are left to their fates. Those who could possibly get jobs are those who are fortunate to have influential parents, uncles, aunties and friends. Jobs are no longer given based on merit and based on the fact that it is one of the many responsibilities of government. How can we make progress in this kind of absurd situation? My position is that, if jobs are limited, government should take proactive measures by empowering the youths with special entrepreneurial skills and assist them financially to start their private businesses and in the same token be employers of labour. This doesn’t happen at an appreciable level. The disadvantages can’t be quantified. Because of frustrations in an apparently hopeless situation, youths on the other hand engage in unproductive ventures thereby causing their futures to be at stake. How sad! Enough is enough. Nigerian government must be serious once again, have pity on these graduates, create opportunities and help them accomplish their highest goals and aspirations. I repeat, celebrating the passing out of corpers isn’t enough, they should be engaged and helped to accomplish their dreams.

I’m truly happy and I rejoice with you on the occasion of your passing out parade. Accept my sincere congratulations. This is one achievement too many. Now here is the key. After passing out, what next? It is true that job opportunities are limited in Nigeria and getting admission for further studies isn’t a bed of roses. All of you are priceless gifts to Nigeria and you can’t afford to stay idle at home. Waiting for the government to extend opportunities would be like chasing shadows. Be a man and woman of vision. Use your skills, resources and get busy doing something that has a direct bearing on your future. It could be something small but trust me, it has the potential to grow like an oak tree. All fingers are not equal, some will get good jobs and some will travel abroad to seek for knowledge. That’s ok. Whatever situation you find yourself in, translate it into an opportunity and strive to be the best you can.
