19 actors who almost died on set; one even got struck by lightning!

Even famous actors and actresses aren’t immune to the occasional near-death experience. Need proof? Check out this list. It’s jam-packed with thrilling tales of close calls and unfortunate accidents that those involved were lucky to walk away from.

Almost died on set – Johnny Depp

A scary moment occurred for actor Johnny Depp while he was filming the 2013 action adventure western The Lone Ranger. Depp was thrown from his horse and subsequently trampled, with the animal’s back leg bruising the actor’s torso. Luckily, he was okay and in good spirits after the incident!

Almost died on set – Tom Cruise

In order to shoot a fight scene for the 2003 film The Last Samurai, Tom Cruise had to hop on a mechanical horse for a sword fight with co-star Hiroyuki Sanada. The only problem was that the mechanical horses the actors were riding malfunctioned, and Cruise suddenly found himself with Sanada’s sword only an inch away from his neck. Thankfully, Sanada’s incredible reflexes and skills enabled him to stop his blade just in time to avoid decapitating Cruise. Now that’s what you call a close shave!

Almost died on set – Jackie Chan

While filming the 1986 action film Armour of God, actor Jackie Chan sustained a very bad injury: a fractured skull. Chan is highly susceptible to injury seeing as he performs all his own stunts. So when one of the scenes in the film required him to jump from a wall to a tree, he obviously obliged. While the first take went fine, the second was a disaster, with Chan falling 25 feet and smacking his head on a rock. The accident required immediate brain surgery and left Chan with a hole in his skull that he now covers with a plastic plug. Talk about a rough landing!

Almost died on set – George Clooney

A particularly frightening incident on the set of the 2006 film Syriana had actor George Clooney contemplating suicide. The accident occurred during a scene where Clooney’s character was getting beaten up. The chair to which he was tied was pushed over and he hit his head, essentially bruising his brain in the process. It was so bad that spinal fluid was leaking from his nose. The aftermath of the injury left Clooney with constant pain and headaches that were so brutal he debated, “Well, you’ll have to kill yourself at some point, you can’t live like this.” After several operations, the pain finally subsided.

Almost died on set – Tom Hanks

While filming the action adventure drama Cast Away, actor Tom Hanks almost died from a seemingly innocuous injury. While on location in Fiji, Hanks cut his leg. The cut became infected and Hanks ended up spending three days in the hospital. It turns out he was suffering from a staph infection and, had it not been treated, he could have died! Thankfully, he was okay and production resumed three weeks later.

Almost died on set – Jason Statham

Now this is what you call a near-death experience! While working on The Expendables 3, actor Jason Statham was lucky to avoid any bodily harm when the brakes of the three-tonne truck he was driving stopped working, forcing him to leap from the vehicle mere moments before it plunged into the Black Sea. Thankfully the truck’s doors had been removed prior to the stunt, so Statham was able to dive to safety.

Almost died on set – Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone has seen his fair share of action over the years. However, it has occasionally forced him to spend time in the hospital. One such occasion was after filming a scene in Rocky IV, in which fellow actor Dolph Lundgren hit him so hard that his rib cage was pushed into his chest, causing his pericardial sac to swell and compress his heart. Stallone wound up spending nine days in intensive care for the hit and could have died if his heart had swollen anymore. Talk about a close call!

Almost died on set – Charlize Theron

While shooting the 2005 sci-fi film Aeon Flux, actress Charlize Theron attempted to perform a backflip and accidentally landed on her neck. The injury was a scary one, with the actress claiming she was “almost paralyzed.” The accident caused the film to shut down for eight weeks while Theron recovered from her injuries.

Almost died on set – Kate Winslet

While shooting a scene for James Cameron’s historical epic Titanic, actress Kate Winslet nearly drowned. It was during a scene where Winslet and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio were running away from a large wave. Winslet’s dress got caught on a gate and she was dragged beneath the water. It was a scary moment, but thankfully she ended up being okay.

Almost died on set – Gerard Butler

Mavericks is a surfing spot in Northern California known for its dangerous waves. Gerard Butler almost died there while working on the film Chasing Mavericks in 2011. The actor was hit by a wave and submerged beneath the water before being rescued and brought to the hospital. Luckily for him, he ended up being okay.

Almost died on set – Michael J. Fox

While shooting Back to the Future Part III, actor Michael J. Fox came incredibly close to dying on set. During a scene in which his character is hung by the neck, Fox offered to perform it without a box beneath his feet to make it more realistic. This meant that his hand placement within the rope’s noose would have to be exactly right. It wasn’t. Fox miscalculated and ended up choking himself to the point where he passed out. Fortunately, someone noticed he was dying and rushed to his aid.

Almost died on set – Isla Fisher

Actress Isla Fisher endured a terrifying moment while filming Now You See Me. The scene in question involved Fisher’s character performing a magic trick in a water tank while being chained. However, she got stuck and remained underwater for close to three minutes. The reason no one rescued her sooner was that they all thought she was acting! Thankfully, Fisher was all right.

Almost died on set – Daniel Day-Lewis

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis is renowned for his ability to throw himself wholeheartedly into a role, consequences be damned. Never was this more on display than the time he contracted pneumonia while filming Gangs of New York. The actor had refused to wear clothes that didn’t exist in the 19th century—when the film is set—and subsequently got quite sick because of it. He initially refused modern medicine, but ultimately relented when he was told he could die from his condition. Good choice.

Almost died on set – Ed Harris

While working on the 1989 underwater action film The Abyss, actor Ed Harris claims to have nearly drowned. James Cameron knew Harris’s oxygen tank would run out before they finished shooting the scene, but he didn’t tell him. Luckily, he survived.

Almost died on set – Jaimie Alexander

Being in the entertainment business is not without its drawbacks. Take Jaimie Alexander, for example. The actress was working on Thor: The Dark World back in 2012 when she tumbled down a rain-soaked metal staircase. “[I] slipped a disc in my thoracic spine and chipped 11 of my vertebrae,” she said. Alexander also dislocated her shoulder and tore a rhomboid muscle, so all in all a pretty bad spill. Back on set a month later, she was lucky she wasn’t paralyzed.

Almost died on set – Jim Caviezel

Actor Jim Caviezel sustained various ailments while portraying Jesus Christ in The Passion of the Christ. He suffered from pneumonia and hypothermia, dislocated his shoulder, contracted a lung infection and, oh yeah, got struck by lightning! Thankfully, Caviezel was able to walk away relatively unscathed by the strike.

Almost died on set – Bob Denver

Bob Denver, who portrayed Gilligan on the ’60s TV show Gilligan’s Island, had a hair-raising experience during an episode involving a lion. Denver’s character was unwittingly trapped inside a hut with the feline predator when it pounced. Luckily, the twin bed where the lion was perched broke when he tried to jump, and the animal’s trainer sprung into action and tackled the beast mid-air, saving Denver from a vicious mauling!

Almost died on set – Matthew Fox

While playing Dr. Jack Shepard on the fantasy TV series Lost, actor Matthew Fox was stabbed with a knife! The knife was supposed to be retractable, but was switched out for a real one. Fortunately, Fox was wearing a protective vest.

Almost died on set – Margaret Hamilton

A scary moment occurred for this on-screen witch while filming the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Margaret Hamilton’s character was supposed to disappear in a cloud of smoke through a trap door before fiery jets were turned on. However, when the door failed to open, she received second- and third-degree burns on her hands and face. The tragedy forced the actress to stop working for six weeks!
