ASUP SUSPENDS NATIONWIDE STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its nationwide strike 15 days after the industrial action began. National President of ASUP, Mr Usman Duste, announced this on Wednesday during the union’s 14th National Delegates Conference at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi state. He said the decision to suspend the strike followed the series of meetings held between the leadership of the union and the Federal Government. According to him, both parties agreed to a Memorandum of Settlement and Action (MoS) on each of the issues raised by the union. “The union considered the suspension to give an opportunity for implementation of the content of Memorandum of Settlement and Action, and shall be reviewed according to the timelines outlined in the MoS,” Duste said. UNN to hold 47th convocation ceremony having 100 plus first class.

The Nigerian job market is to see an injection of 9298 potential employees fresh out of school as the University of Nigeria Nsukka is set to host its 47th convocation scheduled to hold on December 1st. This was disclosed in a pre-convocation press briefing given by the Vice Chancellor, Benjamin Ozurumba. A breakdown of the figure shows 7,830 first degree, diploma and certificate including 132 first class graduates, 1,468 post graduate degrees and diploma comprising 331 doctor of philosophy degrees, 982 Masters Degree and 155 post graduate diplomas. Ozurumba also disclosed that the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, former Abia State Governor, Dr Orji-Uzor Kalu, and the Chairman, Zenith Bank, Mr Jim Ovia will be awarded doctorate degrees. Undergraduate commits suicide in Bauchi ​ A 300-level student of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, on Friday morning reportedly hanged himself. The deceased, Dahiru Adamu, 30, was said to be a student of the Department of Technology Education at the institution. He was found hanging from a tree. The incident was said to have occurred at the Gubi campus of the school along Kano Road. A student of the institution, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, told ​ Saturday PUNCH ​ that the body of the victim was left hanging from the tree for about two hours before it was brought down. Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Police Command, Kamal Datti, said it was the Chief Security Officer of the university that informed the police about the incident. Bomb blast in mubi, Adamawa state claims lives

At least 50 people have been killed in a suicide bombing in the north-eastern Nigerian town of Mubi, police say. The mosque was packed with worshippers during morning prayers when the bomber struck in Adamawa state. Witness Abubakar Sule told AFP news agency that it appears the bomber was part of the congregation. No-one has said they were behind the bombing but the Islamist militants Boko Haram typically target crowded places in northern Nigeria. Some 20,000 people have been killed in Boko Haram's eight-year insurgency. The BBC's Ishaq Khalid reports Boko Haram militants have recently stepped up suicide bombings in Nigeria's north-east after the military recaptured territories previously controlled by the group.
